sense of sound choirmale and femaleThe choir is a collective of exceptional individuals, who under the musical direction of Perri Alleyne-Hughes delivers soulful, rhythmic, organic, sensitive, experimental, alternative and mainstream songs. The members hail from various corners of the globe and the group is based in Liverpool. This a cappella choir reached the grand final of Radio 3’s Choir of the Year competition in 2006 and is available to collaborate with artists to enhance their sound in the studio or live. The choir reached the last 6 choirs in BBC1’s Last Choir Standing. |
You were great to work with, had fantastic voices and offer something really fresh and different.

2009
This was the year that the choir went up a huge notch in terms of their national profile and also in terms of who they were invited to work with and tour alongside.
2008
2008 started with a bang when Sense of Sound Choir was one of the artists among a spectacular line up that celebrated the opening of the 10,000 seater Liverpool Echo Arena on the King’s Dock waterfront. In addition to performing their own distinctinve rendition of ‘Let It Be’, the choir also sang with The Farm, The Christians, pop luminary Dave Stewart and living legend, Ringo Starr! The event, organised to celebrate the beginning of Liverpool’s year as European Capital of Culture, played to a capacity audience and was televised around the world.
Sense of Sound, the organisation, was commissioned by the Liverpool Philharmonic Hall & Events to produce a 90 minute performance piece to mark Holocaust Memorial Day 2008. The commission centred around the theme ”Remember, Reflect, React” and was a mutli-media piece with Sense of Sound Choir featuring prominently throughout. The thought provoking production dealt with the issue of genocide on a global scale using music, movement and visuals and was highly emotive. The performance took place on Friday 25th January 2008 at St. George’s Hall in Liverpool.
On 31st January 2008, Sense of Sound Choir performed in an event organised by Love Music Hate Racism and the Public and Commercial Services Union at the Magnet, Liverpool. The event celebrated diversity and encouraged people to get involved in fighting racism and fascism. Also on the bill were 2Tone Ska legends, The Beat and indie-rockers Hot Club de Paris.
Following the Bafta Award-winning success of The Choir, the sequel The Choir – Boys Don’t Sing returned to BBC Two in February. Featuring the highs and lows of ever-patient choirmaster Gareth Malone, the series followed Gareth as he tackled, in his usual head-on way, the task of teaching choral singing in Lancaster School – a large boys’-only state school in Leicester. Sense of Sound was called upon to help inspire and encourage the boys’ participation. Members of Sense of Sound Choir spent a day in the school delivering workshops and performing alongside the hard-to-reach boys who successfully went on to perform at the Royal Albert Hall in London. The episode featuring Sense of Sound Choir was televised on 15th February 2008. We received an overwhelming response to the choir’s appearance in the hugely popular series and, as a result, have developed many new training partnerships with schools nationally. Subsequently, Sense of Sound Choir was also invited to perform for the BBC’s staff training day.
On 27th March, Sense of Sound Choir was invited to perform at Soccer Aid at St. George’s Hall, Liverpool in aid of the Save the Children fund. The star-studded guestlist included Liverpool F.C. players past and present and an array of celebrities.
On Sunday June 29th, the choir is delighted to be opening the Jazz World Stage at Glastonbury!
2007
2007 was an explosive year for the choir. In March, the choir was called upon to sing a new composition, 5 Minutes to Midnight, by king of Brit pop and creator of the world’s first virtual band, Damon Albarn and the legend that is Brian Eno. The event took place on board the Greenpeace ship, The Rainbow Warrior, and the powerfully enchanting performance was a protest about the increase in trident missiles that the government intended to import into the UK. Britain currently has 20. We were shown the effects of Hiroshima and reminded by statistics and images on a big screen (created by Robert del Naja from Massive Attack) of the atrocities, devastation and mayhem such egomania can cause. The event witnessed by thousands along the banks of the River Thames and on TV screens around the globe catapulted the choir into the public eye and was the start of many more high profile collaborations throughout the year with Albarn, Eno and many others.

In May, the choir was invited to be a part of the Syd Barrett tribute show, Madcap’s Last Laugh at The Barbican in London. The choir’s rendition of Bike opened the show and the end section of Chapter 24 was one of the show’s highlights when once again Sense of Sound proved that their ability to improvise vocally caused a crescendo of such magnitude that many in the audience were reduced to tears. That evening the choir accompanied the following artists; David Gilmour, Roger Waters, Chrissie Hynde, Martha Wainwright, David Coulter and Damon Albarn in the closing finale song to rapturous applause and outstanding reviews.
2006
Sense of Sound Choir has just returned from taking part in the grand finals of the Choir of the Year competition! This prestigious event, which took place on 10th December 2006, is hosted by BBC Radio 3 and was broadcast on radio and television. This is a huge achievement for the choir as it is the first time a non-classical a cappella choir has reached this stage of the competition.
Sense of Sound Choir was formed in November 2005 and since then has catapulted itself onto the Liverpool music scene with a vengeance. Under the musical direction of Perri Alleyne- Hughes, the 30 strong choir delivers a sound that is soulful, joyous, poignant and heartfelt. Perri’s arrangements experiment with rhythm and harmony in a way that pushes the boundaries of a cappella singing.
A multi-cultural ensemble, the choir has to date been called upon to represent Liverpool at The House of Commons in preparation for 2008 when the city becomes the Capital of Culture. In addition the choir also sang at The Royal Naval College in Greenwich, London at The National Chamber Awards 2006.
The a cappella choir is due to feature in the commissioned piece, “Capital of Culture” by Indian classical composer Surinder Sandhu and The Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra in celebration for the title for 2008.
The choir represents and reflects Sense of Sound’s culture and ethos and is made up of professional singers and those that the organisation has trained over the years. Gary Wilkinson from The Observer magazine has described the choir as “the most uplifting and diverse group of inspirational singers I have heard in a long time…yet again Sense of Sound have managed to excel themselves as one of the leading exponents of a cappella performance that this country has seen in a long time”
